At the age of sixteen Charles Dickens decided to learn the Brachygraphy shorthand and trained himself to write shorter and faster. That it poses many difficulties can be read in his novel David Copperfield where the main character is frustrated by applying shorthand.
The first part of this book shows a summary of shorthand and universal language in general and the second part shows the Gurney shorthand system by text examples. Then some of the examples of shorthand notes and letters by Dickens are shown and dissected into their separate syllables.
Title: The Venetian Ciphers of Agostino Amadi
Agostino Amadi created this remarkable work at the end of the 16th century, and its authentic material was hidden for more than four hundred years and never published before. The manuscript of 700 pages is translated and published in different volumes:
Volume 1: English & Italian.
This volume 1 is published in two languages: Italian and English. The original Italian handwritten text was firstly transcribed and translated by Marco Ponzi into modern Italian and then translated into English. In the first Volume, more than 80 different ciphering methods are discussed together with diagrams, tables, symbolic images, with every cipher method containing one or more examples. These are all thoroughly investigated, checked and, where necessary, adjusted, with the addition of comments.
Volume 2: English.
Volume 3: English.
Volume 4-10: English.
The Complete Manuscript: English.
The complete translated manuscript contains all volumes 1-10 with all ciphers and solutions. A short description of the volumes:
Vol.1 with over hundred cipher examples by using rotating wheels and other methods such as pigpen, positional shifts, columnar, transposition, substitution, grilles, babuini tables, music cipher, Basingstoke and Egyptian symbols.
Vol.2 shows ciphers and decipherment techniques using superfluous symbols, poly-alphabetical methods and babuini tables.
Vol.3 discusses poly-steganography using geometric forms and psalms, cipher wheels, and many ancient scripts, such as Hebrew, Chaldean, Chaldee, Phoenician, Babylonian, Gerogliphices, Samaritan, Cofite, Diabolic, Vandals, Schiavone, Illiriche, Aetiopice, etc. Several other ways of secret communication are discussed such as using a clock, crown, music, Neapolitan cord, knots, etc.
Vol.4 is titled Apo-cryptography and contains the most sophisticated ciphers using poly-alphabetical tables and includes ciphers with keywords that Amadi invented himself.
Vol.5: is about chemicals and ingredients for hiding letters, repairing paper and how to tamper with seals.
Vol.7-10 must be used as working material for cipher students, and it contains 101 ciphers, with hints for decipherment and the final solutions.
